From racing down ski runs and glades on a sled or pair of skis to gentle hikes through green Alpine countryside, the year-round outdoor adventures of Säntis are plentiful. At 8,209 feet (2,502 meters) of elevation, this is the highest mountain in eastern Switzerland. From its summit enjoy views over six countries.
The majestic snow-covered scenery of Säntis offers wonderful opportunities for winter activities. Sled along winter hiking trails and down the sledding slope. Go on a snowshoe hike across the white landscape and take an evening walk along lantern-lit paths. Skiing on Säntis is only recommended for experienced skiers, because the runs are not marked or monitored.
Put on sturdy boots and embark on a hiking adventure through the mountainous terrain during the summer. Footpaths range from short to long and easy to challenging. Go walking in the Nature Discovery Park, which starts at the foot of the mountain. Themed nature trails and their information panels provide insights into Alpine farming practices and the plants and animals of Säntis.
Experience the splendor of the mountain scenery on a Nordic walking trip along two designated trails. Learn about Alpine rock and the ancient inhabitants of the mountain when you stroll along the spiral path inside the Geology Park.
Reach the summit and turn slowly for views of Switzerland’s neighboring countries of Germany, Italy, Austria, France and Liechtenstein. While you are here, dine in either of the two panoramic restaurants and visit the free permanent mineral exhibit that covers the mountain's geological history.
Access to Säntis is via the Säntis cable car, which starts out at Schwägalp. The cable car operates daily with departures on the hour and the half hour. Pay extra and enjoy sunrise rides to the summit and evening rides whenever there is a full moon. If you are here between May and November, watch cheese-making demonstrations at the dairy located next to the cable car base station.
