Situated in the heart of Cologne, the Museum Schnütgen can be found inside one of the city's oldest Romanesque churches, St. Cecilia's.
The museum holds over 2,000 pieces making it an extremely precious collection of medieval Christian art. A variety of artifacts are on display ranging from sombre stone statues and wooden sculptures, to the more delicate manuscripts and textiles. You will also find pieces carved from ivory and gold.
Amongst the most notable of items on display are the 11th-century Crucifix of St George, the Parler Bust and the exquisite Comb of St Heribert, masterfully carved from ivory. The beauty of the museum is that a vast majority of the artifacts are on display at eye level so you can admire the incredible detail up close.
The Church of St Cecilia's, originally built in 1130, provides the perfect setting for these ecclesiastical treasures. Stained glassed windows let the natural light in to provide a peaceful background as you peruse the displays. Generally the museum is very quiet, especially if you visit mid-week. This adds to the tranquillity of the atmosphere and overall experience.
If you like, you can rent an audio guide at the museum’s entrance, which will explain the cultural relevance of these religious displays. Should you happen to visit the Church of St Cecilia's around Christmas or Easter, you might be able to attend one of the services.
Museum Schnütgen in Focus is a recurring exhibition series which shines a spot light on a particular gathering of artifacts from across the collection. The museum shares its lobby with the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum next door, which gives you the option of purchasing a combined entry ticket to both.
You can also avail of one of the free guided tours during the week. For current information on guided tours, entry times and prices check the museum's official website.
Centrally located, the Museum Schnütgen is near the Neumarkt U-Bahn station. If you are travelling by bus, take the number 136 or 146 from the city centre. Car parking is also available at the nearby Cäcilienstraße.
