Windsurf on the South China Sea or hike up to a lookout to gaze over the surrounding islands at this waterfront park to the east of Hong Kong.

Swim, raft or hike in the area around this hub of outdoor activities far outside the city. The sandy shoreline of Shek O Beach offers plenty of space to tan, the water is great for sports like surfing and the rocky surroundings attract climbers and hikers. After spending a day outdoors, drop by Shek O village to tour heritage buildings and eat fresh seafood from local waters.

If you are travelling with children, Shek O Beach is a perfect attraction, since the waters are calm, the sand is clean and lifeguards patrol the area. Wade in the water or nap on the peaceful beach, which seems like a world away from the constant bustle of the Hong Kong sprawl.

Watersports can be found north of Shek O Beach in Big Wave Bay, one of the best places for surfing and windsurfing in Hong Kong. Rafts are available as well. Float out into the channel toward the numerous islands that dot the seascape. The southerly Rocky Bay Beach is surrounded by cliffs, which are excellent for climbing and hiking.

Explore bamboo forests in the interior of the Shek O Peninsula by walking the Dragon’s Back trail that snakes through Shek O Country Park. Climb the verdant hills up to an exposed mountainside, which grants you an open view of the South China Sea.

The small village of Shek O is over two centuries old. Walk its streets to find beautiful historic attractions like the Tin Hau Temple, which dates back to 1891 and is covered in traditional Chinese designs.

Enjoy the bounty of the bay at a local restaurant. Otherwise, buy some meat at a grocery store and cook your own meal at a barbecue along the beach.

Shek O Beach lies on a peninsula to the east of Hong Kong. Reach it by bus from Shau Kei Wan. The beach is open daily and can be accessed free of charge.
