Immerse yourself in a past era when you visit The Point in Portsmouth. Located at the tip of Old Portsmouth, The Point itself is just opposite Gunwharf Quays and looks out toward the Spinnaker Tower. Explore the surrounding area, a beautiful part of Portsmouth rich with historical landmarks, restaurants, bars and seafront views.
Originally The Point was surrounded by fortifications built to protect the harbor’s entrance. Walk along the front today and notice the remains of these early defenses, including the Round Tower and the Square Tower. Historically, the area served the needs of those who went to sea and was filled with restaurants, pubs and brothels. Because of this, the neighborhood had a rough reputation but was still popular among locals, just as it is today.
Explore the narrow cobbled streets and enjoy looking at all the old buildings and houses. Head to the seafront for fantastic views of Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Sit and watch fishing boats, naval ships, commercial ships and yachts as they come and go. If, like many, you decide you can spend a while doing this, head to one of the local pubs and watch from there.
Walk along the waterfront, following the Millennium Walkway and Feltham Row to and from Gunwharf Quays. Along the footpath learn about the history of the area and pass historical landmarks such as the old fishing dock. Admire the very modern Spinnaker Tower rising high above the masts of moored sailboats. At lunchtime, head to the marina where you can find many shops, restaurants and bars. Stop at one of the fish markets to pick up delicious fresh seafood to take home.
The best way to reach The Point is by walking along the front from Gunwharf Quays or driving and parking nearby. Alternatively, use the bus service, with a stop just a few minutes away on foot.
A visit to The Point is scenic and historical, popular among both locals and visitors for its charming atmosphere. If you like boats, simply sit and watch activities in the harbor and smell the sea air.
