Thong Krut Beach is one of the main destinations for visitors to Koh Samui's south coast. And, once you get here, it's not hard to see why – the traditional, multicoloured Kolae boats make for a wonderful contrast against the expanse of sea and sky, and you can catch and eat some of the finest seafood in Koh Samui. What's more, the picturesque islands of Koh Mudsum and Koh Tan are just a short boat ride away.
You'll want to get to Thong Krut Beach as early as possible to catch the fishermen as they leave for the day. The riot of colour as the Kolae – elongated, highly decorated boats with prominent bows and sterns – enter the water, is a sight to behold. Then, if you fancy a spot of fishing yourself, take a stroll around the bay and choose from the many operators that organise fishing charters there should be something to suit all budgets and groups.
The waters around the beach are quite murky and often crowded with boats, so if you're looking to swim or try out some watersports you're better off waiting until you're on Koh Samui's northern or eastern coasts. Alternatively, you can take a day trip to Koh Mudsum or Koh Tan. The sandy coastlines of these pretty islands are ideal for sunbathing and swimming. It's also easy to organise snorkelling, diving or fishing trips around here.
After a day out and about, head back to Thong Krut Beach to unwind. Grab a beachside cocktail as afternoon turns into evening. Then take a table at one of the area's many restaurants, some of which serve the best seafood on the entire island. There's very little accommodation at Thong Krut, so you'll probably have to leave as night falls. But you can always come back tomorrow…
