Some of the best views of Bogota are found at the lookout of Torre Colpatria. This skyscraper's observation deck at 196 metres (643 feet) not only gives the lookout a bird's-eye panorama, but also places the tower amongst the tallest buildings in South America.
Ride the skyscraper elevator to its top floor and prepare for the breathtaking cityscape. From the observation deck, 48 floors up, you'll get unobstructed views of Bogota, Monserrate and beyond. The observation deck is open to the public on weekends and public holidays and has an entry fee. Bring a camera to take aerial photographs of city landmarks.
Amongst many sights, point out the Planetarium of Bogotá and the city’s bullring, Plaza de Toros de Santamaría. Look over the minute rooftops of the La Candelaria district in Bogota's centre and spot the city cathedral. Above this neighbourhood, the peaks of Monserrate and Guadelupe Hill remind you of the city's altitude. If weather permits, you might even see parts of Chingaza National Park to the east.
As you explore the city at night, look to the tower for a brilliantly lit spectacle. The LED lights running up the length of the tower are visible from all parts of the city. In December, the colours of the LED lights atop the observation deck represent the colours of the Columbian flag. Over this season, the tower also hosts a running event in which competitors take on a gruelling race up its 900 steps.
Find the Torre Colpatria in downtown Bogotá. Its easily visible site can be reached using frequent bus and subway routes. Alternatively, take the hop-on, hop-off tourist bus to a stop nearby. Paid parking is also available on-site. After spotting landmarks from its lookout, browse exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art or find a trinket at the Mercado de las Pulgas (Flea Market).
