Travel back in time to ancient Egypt and discover the secrets of the pharaohs in Dorchester's celebrated mummy museum.

The Tutankhamun Exhibition sheds new light on the discovery of the famous pharaoh's grave and recreates it in meticulous detail. The mystery of the Egyptian boy ruler who was buried in an ornate tomb among vast riches has captured the imaginations of all generations. Follow the story of Tutankhamun’s discovery through impressively recreated burial chambers.

In 1922, archaeologist Howard Carter found the immaculately preserved sepulcher of a 18-year-old boy who had been one of Egypt's mighty pharaohs. The unearthed artifacts were exhibited around the world throughout the 20th century and the quality of their preservation suffered. As a result, the Egyptian government decided to prevent the treasures from traveling. Learn about this period of history through precise recreations of these priceless artifacts and the rooms they were found in.

The exhibits here are designed to appeal to all the senses. Walk through the various chambers of a pharaoh's tomb and inhale the smells of embalming oils and ointments, accurately reproduced to resemble those used in ancient Egypt. Marvel at the lavish antechamber, lined with golden figures, couches shaped like animals and the king's opulent throne.

In the hall of treasures, examine the king's iconic funeral mask with its famous gold-and-blue headdress. These world-renowned reproductions have been featured on television and in print and were created to make the archaeological findings widely accessible to anyone wanting to learn more about them.

In the burial chamber, witness a figure depicting Carter excitedly unearthing the coffins. Then come face-to-face with King Tut himself in an accurate recreation of his mummified body. Read more about the archeological expedition at the information points throughout the museum.
