With luxury shopping and dining, picturesque courtyards and the Atlantic Ocean just steps away, it is easy to understand why this Palm Beach street is a big draw.

New York City has Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills has Rodeo Drive and Palm Beach has Worth Avenue. This upscale shopping destination stretches for four blocks between Lake Worth and the Atlantic Ocean and features more than 200 stores, boutiques, restaurants and parks.

With storefronts exuding opulence at every turn, it’s difficult to imagine Worth Avenue’s original incarnation as Jungle Road. Back in the early 20th century, alligator wrestling was one of its main attractions. That all changed in 1914 when architect Addison Mizner opened the exclusive Everglades Club and an atmosphere of indulgence spread.

Browse the shops for art, antiques and fashions that have come straight off the runway. Brands synonymous with luxury, such as Hermès and Chanel, have long taken up residence here. The oldest store, Kassatly’s, has been selling linens to customers since 1923.

Explore Esplanade at 150 Worth, an open-air mall by the Atlantic. It features some of the most luxurious brands in the world, including Gucci, Saks Fifth Avenue and Louis Vuitton.

As you make our way through the area, stop by Villa Mizner where Worth Avenue’s architect used to live. The stunning town palace was built in 1924 and was influenced by Mediterranean and Arabic styles. Mizner used to host daily cocktail parties during which composer Irving Berlin would play the piano. Among the avenue’s other highlights are its casual and fine dining restaurants, shaded arcades and hidden courtyards.

Throughout the year, the avenue hosts lots of free and paid events. They include concerts, historical walking tours and craft shows. For details of what's on when you are in the area, visit the avenue's official website.

Worth Avenue is best experienced on foot. If you have a rental car, you will find there is plenty of parking available. Many stores will validate parking if you make a purchase.

After you’re done shopping or dining, enjoy a stroll with views of the water. Whether you head toward the Intracoastal Waterway or to the Atlantic Ocean, the delightful scenery won’t disappoint.
