Walk across Korea’s first-ever drawbridge, which links mainland Busan with the island district of Yeongdo, and watch as it opens to let boats pass through.

Yeongdodaegyo Bridge is a vital element of Busan’s maritime activities. This short drawbridge allows boat traffic to pass safely between the city’s north and south harbors. Yeongdodaegyo Bridge provides a connection for pedestrians and vehicles between the southern tip of Busan’s Jung District and Yeongdo District. The sight of the drawbridge opening and the ships sailing beneath the bridge stirs curiosity among locals and tourists alike.

Inaugurated in 1934, the bridge is the first-built drawbridge in South Korea. During the Korean War, the bridge became a meeting place for disbanded families to reunite. Excessive traffic congestion forced the closure of the bridge in 1966. The decision was made to reopen it in 2013 but with the drawbridge only opening once a day.

Cross the bridge via its pedestrian footpath and pause to admire the views. Look north toward the rooftops of Jung District and spot notable city landmarks such as Busan Tower. To the east is Busandaegyo Bridge.

Arrive in the early afternoon to watch the drawbridge in action. It takes about 15 minutes to open and close. Note the seagulls, which are painted on the section that rises. The boardwalk, which runs either side of the bridge’s northern end, is a great vantage point. Here you can also find a small sculpture exhibition and interpretive signs with historical information about the landmark.

If you decide to cross to the Yeongdo District side then continue by foot to the Samjin Fish Cake History Museum. Opened in 1953, this is Busan’s longest-running eomuk (fish cake) producer. There’s an area where you can watch people make this popular snack and a bakery-like store where you can sample different varieties. Adventurous visitors might want to have a go at making their own.

Yeongdodaegyo Bridge is within comfortable walking distance of major attractions in Jung District. Among these is Jagalchi Fish Market and the Gwangbokro Culture and Fashion Street. Another place worth visiting in Yeongdo District is the free National Maritime Museum.
