See a real Halifax Bomber and learn about aircraft technology during World War II at this intriguing museum in a former bomber command station.

Yorkshire Air Museum tells the story of wartime Britain from a historical World War II command site. Explore intriguing exhibitions on the evolution of flight and see approximately 50 aircrafts, including a restored Halifax Bomber. There are also ground vehicles and pre-war flying machines stored in this fascinating museum.

Amble through the large restoration workshop hangar to see wartime aircrafts being reconditioned back to their best. Note the range of models, including Victor, Nimrod, Hunter and Buccaneer. Some of the planes have just returned from recent conflicts in the Middle East.

The highlight of the museum is the Halifax Bomber. Climb inside the aircraft and imagine flying it in the heat of a battle. Capture photos of the historic bomber, which played a key role in the outcome of World War II.

Inspect the antqiue flying machines that pre-date the war. The Cayley Glider first took off in 1849, which is more than half a century before the Wright Brothers made their first flight. Learn about more innovations and pioneers of flight in the hangar.

The Air Gunner Collection is a tribute to the 20,000 gunners who lost their lives in the war. Find out about the weapons and techniques of the air gunners in this poignant section.

There is also a library, a collection of military uniforms and several ground vehicles, such as tanks, fire engines and buses.

Peruse the aircraft-themed souvenirs at the gift shop. You will find model airplanes, books, photos and more. Enjoy snacks and refreshments at the museum’s café.

There is a reasonable fee for adults, with a discount for children under 16 and free admission for toddlers. The museum opens daily from morning until late in the afternoon year-round.Yorkshire Air Museum is situated 7 miles (11.3 kilometres) southeast of York. There is a large parking lot on site.
