Ascend to the observation deck of Prague’s tallest building, a 1980s TV tower whose exterior is adorned with distinctive sculptures of climbing babies.

At a height of more than 700 feet (215 meters), the unusual Zizkov Television Tower rises high above the domes and spires of Prague’s skyline. The structure, which resembles a rocket about to launch, can be seen from many parts of the city. Marvel at the striking futuristic-style design and the unusual baby sculptures on the exterior before heading up to the viewing platform to enjoy 360-degree views of the city.

Designed and built in the late 1980s, this unique tower is often cited as being one of the ugliest buildings in the world. Ugly though it may be, it does serve a purpose, hosting aerials to pick up broadcasting signals. The tower also features a one-room hotel as well as a café, bar and restaurant.

From the base, gaze up at the tower’s silver façade upon which a series of black ceramic babies appear to crawl around the surface. These sculptures are part of an art instillation titled Miminka by Czech sculptor David Černý. Although they may look small from ground-level, these babies are in fact over 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall. Originally intended to be a temporary installation, they now remain on the tower indefinitely.

Take the lift up to the lookout decks, which are located at a height of over 300 feet (91 meters). Watch a short film about the tower’s construction and admire the panoramic views over the city. The deck features seating for those who want to rest their legs.

Make a reservation for the restaurant, located 216 feet (66 meters) off the ground, to enjoy a meal with a stellar view. The tower also has a bar and a more casual café serving food and drink.

If you are traveling with children you may want to squeeze in a round of mini-golf at Tower Park Praha. The course is located in the park directly beneath the tower where there is also another restaurant.

Zizkov Television Tower is open daily from morning until midnight. There is an entrance fee to access the observatory, which you can reach by elevator.
