With its beautiful beaches, striking harbours and vast swathes of desert, Australia’s most remote state capital is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the climate.

Lying on the banks of the Swan River, Perth is the stunning capital of Western Australia, home to great beaches, wineries and breweries, as well as many famous historic spots. From here you can bathe in the dazzling waters of the Indian Ocean, feel the breeze of the Freo Doctor, and get to know the city’s 1.8 million fun-loving inhabitants.

Head to the Botanic Garden for a barbecue high up in the captivating surroundings of Kings Park, or for an even more impressive view of the landscape and the Swan River climb up the Swan Bells Bell Tower. You can explore the region’s history by paying a visit to Western Australian Museum and even see the world’s most valuable coin at the Perth Mint. If you’re bringing the kids, don’t miss a trip to the Perth Zoo or embark on a journey of discovery at Scitech.

For a real education about Perth and the culture of this part of Australia, head for the Perth Cultural Centre just north from the city’s train station. From here you can visit the Art Gallery of Western Australia with its vivid Aboriginal art works, and then enjoy a great night out around Northbridge.

If you want to venture a little further, go out to the suburbs of Subiaco and Cottlesloe. You can take a dip in the waters at Cottlesloe Beach before trailing the coast round to Hillarys Boat Harbour for fun with the family. Or to learn about the aquatic life of the region, head for the Aquarium of Western Australia.

In the region surrounding Perth, you’ll find many wineries and fruit farms as well as old mining towns and wildlife areas to discover and explore. Rent a car to find your own way round, or take a ferry trip to Fremantle and its historic attractions. Western Australia’s famous jails are worth a visit too, especially the Round House and Fremantle Prison. The Western Australian Maritime Museum is another great experience, and ideal preparation for a visit to see the quokkas and seals on Rottnest Island.
