Step inside these colonial buildings to learn about the development of Mexico. Enjoy the excellent views from the rooftop café.

Amparo Museum is an iconic institution that showcases a comprehensive overview of Mexico’s history. It covers pre-Hispanic, colonial and modern times, with artistic and historical displays within two buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Get an insight into the country’s identity and development from the fascinating displays.

Take a guided tour in English for a more complete understanding of the museum and its displays. Browse the intriguing permanent exhibits that inform you about the changes to Mexican culture over the centuries.

Inspect artworks from the pre-classic period to the Spanish Conquest and note how the styles adjust to fit the times. The collection includes tools, ecclesiastical figures and sculptures from a great variety of indigenous peoples.

One of the two colonial-style buildings was the family home of the local Espinoza family from 1871 until the 1980s, when Don Manuel Espinoza Yglesias converted it into a museum in memory of his wife. Visit the Colonial Area for its rooms depicting how the house looked at various stages of the past few centuries. Paintings, silver, pottery and period furniture fill the halls.

Examine the items on display in the temporary exhibits, which have covered such themes as the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City and other Mexican institutions. See works by national and local artists and attend the occasional concerts, workshops and seminars.

Take a break from the displays with snacks and refreshments at the delightful rooftop café, enclosed by glass, with a surrounding open terrace overlooking the city. Snap photos of the excellent views of the church domes and steeples decorating the cityscape.

The museum opens Wednesday through Monday from morning until late afternoon. Get in for free on Sundays or Mondays or pay to visit on other days.

Amparo Museum is in the central part of the city of Puebla. Take a bus to one of the stops surrounding the complex and walk around this busy area. Make sure to see other attractions in the area, such as the Museo Viviente, the Justice Palace and the House of Culture.
