A verdant gem in the heart of central Brussels, this large city park, with its grand avenues and historical buildings, is a favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Brussels Park, the largest in the city, was built in the late 1700s, on land that once belonged to the Duke of Brabant. Today its 13 hectares of parkland play a central role in city life, hosting events and concerts and providing locals with an idyllic space in which to walk, jog or enjoy an al fresco lunch.

Take a leisurely stroll through this perfectly rectangular park, admiring its neoclassical design. As you follow the symmetrical paths, you'll come across statues, grand fountains and charming bandstands. Head to the central pond, the park's centrepiece, where you'll get a fantastic vista along two of the park's wide avenues.

Brussels Park is also a great place to learn about the city's history. It was here that the riots of 1830 took place – events that sparked the Belgian revolution. Start at the north end where the Belgian Parliament is located. Then walk the length of the park through the central avenue at the southernmost end you'll find the splendid Royal Palace.

On sunny days, there's no better place to be lunchtime sees the park inundated with workers grabbing a bite to eat or getting some exercise. Why not go for a jog in the shade of the lime trees that line the park's perimeter? There's plenty of politically and historically significant buildings to admire as you pass, including the US embassy. Alternatively, just sit back, relax and people-watch.

During the summer months, the park is used as a venue for outdoor festivals, parties and concerts, including a popular children's puppet show, which is held under the park's oldest trees. Indoor entertainment can be found at the Theatre Royal du Parc all year round.

Brussels Park is free to enter and open every day. The Brussels City official website is the best place to find information about upcoming events. If you come by car you can find paid parking on nearby streets, but taking the metro is a cheaper option.
