Bring the kids to one of the largest slides in Scotland and explore the Georgian furnishings and kitchen traditions of this historic château.

Callendar House is a majestic mansion at the centre of a large landscape park. Dating back to the 14th century, it has amassed collections of historical relics that tell its story. Learn the rich history of the house as you move through the various stately halls and chambers and view its fascinating displays.

Admire the French Renaissance style that was added over the years to this large house. The building is three stories high and towers over the rest of the park. Among the mansion’s highlights is the working Georgian kitchen resembling the cooking areas of British period dramas. Try some of the traditional recipes and converse with the cook. Hear tales of the staff who worked below the stairs over the centuries. Explore the Pink Room and the Green Room to see the restored Georgian furniture and upholstery.

Visit the Park Gallery for a range of exhibits on modern visual arts. Move to the Second Floor Galleries to learn about cultural heritage. Permanent exhibits include The Antonine Wall. Look around the Victorian library, which houses important Falkirk archives.

Relax in the tearoom with spectacular views of the park. This part of the house was first constructed in the late 1600s.

Venture into the park to bring the kids to the crazy golf and adventure playground with one of Scotland’s largest slides. Stroll through the serene woodland to the Forbes family mausoleum. Events including firework displays and festivals take place in this park.

Peruse the items for sale, such as jewellery, chocolate and books, at the gift shop. Learn of the prominent historical figures who stayed at this château, including Oliver Cromwell, Queen Victoria and Mary, Queen of Scots.

Visit the house from morning until late afternoon any day except Sundays. Admission to the house is free.

Callendar House is in a large park in the southeastern region of the city. Take a regular bus from central Falkirk to the mansion in less than 10 minutes. The 1-mile (1.6-kilometres) walk from Falkirk Grahamston Railway Station should take about 20 minutes.
