These buildings that make up one of Scotland’s most important events venues have become iconic sights on the banks of the River Clyde.

The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) has earned a prestigious reputation for hosting some of the biggest events in the U.K. The different buildings that comprise the center are unmistakable sights on the riverside, their contemporary metallic architecture fitting in with the ultra-modern waterfront, which also features two stylish museums. Walk along the banks of the River Clyde to admire the unique structures or attend one of the many impressive events hosted within.

When development began on the SECC at the end of the 1970s, the site was a derelict dockyard. After the first concert in the new center in 1985, the area has continued to progress, adding an extra auditorium, a hotel and a concert stadium. Visit this location, now one of the most important venues in Glasgow’s events and arts scene.

Wander around the site of the SECC and take photos of the distinctive buildings. The croissant-like Clyde Auditorium, known affectionately as “the Armadillo,” was designed by Norman Foster and has a roof consisting of curved ridges. The SSE Hydro, one of the busiest gig venues in the world, is a translucent ellipse, while the frontage of the main SECC building is made entirely from glass.

Purchase tickets to one of the gigs or events hosted here. Famous bands such as U2 have performed here, while sporting events, such as the Commonwealth Games, have also been held in this multipurpose precinct. Spend an evening laughing at popular stand-up comics or attending a crafts workshop in the main building’s breakout rooms.

Head farther along the Clyde to the Riverside Museum, a striking piece of architecture with an entrance shaped like a sound wave. Inside, exhibits are dedicated to the history of travel and transportation, with examples of carriages, boats and bicycles from throughout history. Directly across the river from the SECC is the bulbous, metal Glasgow Science Centre, a museum with interactive exhibits and a planetarium.

The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre is located next to Exhibition Centre train station, which operates regular services into Glasgow Central. Drive here and use the metered parking on-site.
