Named for the second governor of Singapore, Sir Andrew Clarke, the quay used to be the most important docking point in the city. More recently, the commercial traffic has moved upriver, and Clarke Quay has been refurbished and modernised to cater for the evening entertainment needs of a cosmopolitan population: this is Singapore's foremost destination for lovers of good food and night-time recreation.
Top quality cuisine is on offer here, from the best local dishes or seafood, to Italian or Mediterranean choices. Dining outside along the water allows you to enjoy the cool evening breezes coming in off the water. Chinese 'junk' boats are moored along the key, offering relaxing views over the river. They are also home to a number of pubs and fine eateries. Take a local 'bumboat' to enjoy being out on the water and exploring the Singapore River.
One of the new innovations installed as part of the area's renovation is the street illumination ā a set of striking umbrellas casting their light on the squares and lanes of Clarke Quay. These modern lights really set the scene for this stylish district where street musicians and acrobats are always found entertaining the large crowds along the waterside walkway. Recent years have seen the quay become a hub of top-quality electronic music, so come along and go dancing! Magic shows are also a feature, or you can just enjoy a drink in the company of a sophisticated mix of local and international patrons.
Adjacent to the city centre, Clarke Quay is accessible on foot. There is also plenty of paid car parking available, or you can take the bus. Open every day, and free to enter..
