Copley Square

Explore some of Boston’s finest buildings, educational and arts institutions, and shopping, or simply find a patch of grass and relax.

Part of the wealthy Back Bay neighbourhood, Copley Square is a charming green square steeped in history. Historical buildings and the grand Copley Square Fountain form the backdrop for families, friends and office workers who come to relax on the grass and enjoy the great atmosphere. The Square plays host to a large famers market twice a week, and is a good place to sample the diverse local food.

The space used to be called Arts Square, giving some indication of its artistic, cultural and historical importance. It was renamed in 1883 after the local painter John Singleton Copley. There are lots of sights of historical interest in the square, including the Old South Church and the Trinity Church. Both date back to the late 19th Century and Trinity Church in particular is famous for its Romanesque Revival architecture and detailed murals.

Also famous for its murals is the beautiful Boston Public Library, which was built in the Italian Renaissance style in 1895. It was the first free-lending library in the United States and contains a pretty inner courtyard and fountain. If you’re interested in architecture and design, you should also visit the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, which is famous for its impressive gilded entrance hall.

Because Copley Square is home to so many historical buildings, the modern John Hancock Tower really stands out as being different. At 60 storeys high, this is the tallest building in Boston and along with the Prudential Tower is a great place to enjoy views across the city.

When you have finished marvelling at the area’s architectural treasures, you can head to nearby Copley Place, one of the most exclusive shopping malls in Boston. With more than 70 stores to choose from, you are guaranteed to find something to take home as a souvenir from your travels. Copley Place is also famous for being the finishing line of the Boston Marathon, which is held every year on Patriots Day in April.

Copley Square can be easily reached by subway or bus and is part of the Back Bay area. Parking is tricky, so it’s best to use public transport.
