Delve into Maastricht’s underground labyrinth at Fort St. Pieter and learn about the structure's intriguing history. Discover the secrets of the well and find out how these tunnels are connected to the Three Musketeers d’Artagnan. The defensive structure features a number of cannons and its walls bear the scars of past battles. Climb the fort’s towers for a stunning view of Maastricht.
Fort St. Pieter was built in 1702 under the command of military leader, Daniel Wolff Baron Dopff. Its strategic location above the River Maas has contributed to it being one of the most important fortresses in the province of Limburg. In 2007, the fortress received a restoration to enhance its authentic look.
For the most informative experience of the fort, take a guided tour. These English-spoken tours, which leave twice daily, are the only way you can explore the fort’s inner workings. Explore the tunnels that connect the fort with the caves below St. Pietersberg (Mount St. Peter) and find a well that once provided water for the troops.
Guides have a wealth of stories about the battles that were fought over these defences. Listen to fascinating anecdotes while spotting the evidence of such clashes around the fort walls. Amongst the fort’s main defences, spot cannons, guns and a mortar gallery. Follow the tour to the fort’s top and enjoy a splendid vantage point over the city. From atop these walls, it’s easy to imagine facing ancient invaders from beyond. Look to St. Pietersberg, from where French conqueror Louis XIV bombarded the city and fort with cannon balls in 1673.
Find Fort St. Pieter in Maastricht’s southern district, just a short drive from the city centre. Tours go for about an hour and charge a fee.
