Admire engravings and statues as you ascend the twirling staircase of this tower for a panoramic view of the city of Xi’an.

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is a symbolic leaning structure that lights up the night sky. The tower rises to a height of 210 feet (64 meters) and has an elegant square cone design. It is part of the Da Ci’en Temple Complex and draws Buddhist pilgrims from across the world. Gaze up at the tall seven-story structure from afar to appreciate its splendor.

See the pagoda at night, when it is illuminated against the night sky. The structure, which noticeably leans to the west, can be seen from afar due to its height, dwarfing the surrounding trees. Capture photos of the bright brick structure with small buildings at its base and the colored steps that lead to it. It was initially constructed in A.D. 652 before being rebuilt and made taller 52 years later.

Enter the tower and peruse the works of art in the various halls. Admire the sculptures of Buddha by acclaimed artist Yan Liben of the Tang Dynasty. Climb the spiraling stairs and notice the artworks by esteemed calligraphers. Four arched doors are on each level, offering views of the surrounding forest and the city of Xi’an. Pick out your favorite attractions in the city from the top floor.

Listen to intriguing tales about the pagoda. It takes its name from a legend about a wild goose whose wings broke at the moment that monks asked the deity Bodhisattva for food. They took this as a sign to stop eating meat.

Discover the other gems of the Da Ci’en Temple Complex, such as the statue of admired leader Xuanzang. Visit the site’s namesake temple, which is guarded by statues of lions. It is recognizable by its bell tower and drum tower. Relax in the North Square beside its huge water fountain and sculptures.

The site opens daily from morning until late afternoon. Pay a small fee to climb the pagoda.

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is in the southern part of Xi’an. Drive 5 miles (8 kilometers) south from the city center to reach the site. Regular buses also service the pagoda.
