Enjoy the glorious view of cascades, mountains and an intricate patchwork of fields, where taro for the island’s famous poi dish is grown.

The Hanalei Valley Lookout is one of Hawaii’s most iconic vistas. The panorama features the waterfalls and dramatic mountains that surround a lush, green valley with fields of taro, flanked by the Hanalei River. See mist and localized showers casting rainbows across the blue sky on sunny days.

Gaze up at the tall Namolokama Mountain that serves as a scenic backdrop to the view. Admire the various shades of green that make up the valley floor, the individual fields and the verdant mountains. The patchwork of taro fields is split into small squares full of marshes and crops, which have been cultivated here for centuries.

Go on a nature walk with your family for a sense of the size and beauty of the area. Encounter some of the scenic waterfalls that decorate the hilly surroundings. Listen for several species of bird native to the island. Enjoy the serenity of this agricultural area, away from the bustle of towns. It is particularly enchanting at sunset, when the changing hues of the sky are reflected in the wet patches of the fields.

Lay down a blanket for a picnic with friends near this picturesque viewing platform. Snap photos of this vista as an excellent souvenir of your Hawaii vacation. Much of the poi that is produced and sold in Hawaii comes from this vast and scenic valley. It is a traditional Hawaiian dish with a pale purple color and is often served with salmon or salted fish.

Visit the various shopping centers beside the valley. Dine at one of the restaurants in the charming town of Hanalei.

The Hanalei Valley Lookout is in the southeastern part of Princeville on Kauai Island’s northern coast. It is a little north of the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge. Leave your car in one of the designated spaces of the small adjacent parking lot. Visit nearby sights, such as the Hanalei Bridge, the Princeville Shopping Center and the Makai Golf Club.
