The carpets in the room were stained, the comforter on the bed had bleach stains on it, the towels were rough and thin (almost falling apart). The bathroom was tiny, even for me (a 5'0" woman) and there was NO vanity so it was very difficultt to get ready in the mornings. The shower head had scum on it and the water pressure was non-existent. One of the outlets wouldn't even hold my charging brick for my phone (it just fell out of the wall). My room key de-magnetized twice during my stay which was incredibly inconvenient, but thankfully the staff were helpful and very nice. The deadbolt on my door wouldn't close unless I physically pulled the door up (not that easy for a small woman, but that's what the doorman himself told me to do). My room had 2 windows which looked directly into another guest's room so I had to keep the blinds closed the entire time. I dislike that the hangers aren't actual hangers that came off the closet, so I couldn't hang my attire anywhere else. The only reason I even gave it more than 1 star is because my heat worked and the whole town lost power during my stay but our power stayed on. And no, I shouldn't have to book a "deluxe" room to have a decent room. The hotel is 120 years old and felt every bit of its age.

We stayed at Monterey Hotel for 3 nights and there were few things that bothered a lot and was inconvinient. 1. The most prominent one was the fake promise. At the time of checkin the receptionist said the coffee and water bottles are complimentary and there is no limit on it. Now that doesn't mean I wanted to just keep drinking water or coffee and water. On the very first day I asked them for 2 water bottle and they gave me, all good so far. but after that for rest of the 3 days they ran out of bottle and didn't care to refill it. 2. There are two parts to the building which I realized later, old and new. The old building is three stories high and doesn't have an elevator. There is one in the new building but then you need to walk from there to old one with few more stairs to climb. It specially becomes difficult with stroller and toddlers. 3. While taking a shower if you have set the temperature to warmer side you might get some very hot water or very cold water in between. Which can burn you. 4. They don't have a parking space, you will have to pay for the parking and a little walk to the parking area didn't feel that safe once it was dark. Even though we didn't spend a lot of time staying in the hotel, due to all these issues coming back to the hotel was not very exciting.

Unfortunately only got to spend one night in Monterey. Picked this hotel as the Groome SFO shuttle pickup was across the street. Is around 25 minutes walk to the Aquarium and main tourist area. Plenty of food options nearby. Hotel is older and the room I had just had views of other walls but was clean and tidy and friendly staff.

This hotel is charming, conveniently situated near coffee shops, restaurants, tourist shops and more. Parking is available very close by. I stay here every few months and it never disappoints!

Historic, charming hotel in Old Monterey conveniently located to many restaurants, shopping and the Golden State Theatre. Although the room and bathroom were not very spacious because of its historic nature, it was clean and we had a great night's rest. Staff was friendly and there is a grab-and-go breakfast (mainly fruits, coffee and tea.) Would definitely stay again if back in the area for its charm and convenient location.
