After a hike through the Hawai’ian wilderness, be rewarded with the stunning sights and cooling spray of Manoa Falls. See the picturesque sight of water cascading down a vertical rock face and a magnificent array of flora living in the rainforest. Some of the species here are unique to this island.
Manoa Falls is the tallest waterfall you can access on O’ahu. Water cascades down a sheer rock face from a 45-metre (150-foot) height and tumbles into a small round pool. The pristine scenery and untouched feel of the area made it an ideal filming location for the makers of the Hollywood movie Jurassic Park and the Lost television series. Manoa Falls is a popular spot for hikers looking to explore the O’ahu wilderness.
Notice the plant life slowly change as you follow the trail to the waterfall. Listen out for the waterfall as you approach it. The waterfall looks most impressive after heavy rain. Once you reach it, simply admire the waterfall’s beauty and its surrounding scenery. The area makes for great photo opportunities and there are a few spots to enjoy a picnic lunch. Continue along the trail up the ridge to find clear views over the North Shore.
The waterfall trail is a scenic 3-kilometre (2-mile) round trip. Set aside 2 hours to walk there and back, but allow more time for your break beside the cascading waters. Wear sturdy shoes as the trail can become muddy in parts. Insect repellent will also be required to protect you from mosquitos. If you’re travelling alone and would prefer some company, go on a guided trip. These trips also include interesting information about the history and ecology of the area.
Manoa Falls are accessible for free year-round. Paid parking is available at the foot of the falls, or you can catch a bus from central Honolulu.
