Experience a Japanese comedy performance, watch acrobat shows and attend live music events at the Nanba Grand Kagetsu theatre. When it opened in 1987 the theatre’s modern innovations helped to revolutionise the image of Osaka’s playhouses.
The theatre is the home of the Japanese comedy brand Yoshimoto, established in 1912. Popular shows to see include Shin-Kigeki, sketch shows that revolve around family matters such as love and marriage. Watch a Manzai show, a traditional style of Japanese stand-up comedy where two high-speed performers trade jokes. During a Rakugo show a lone kimono-clad comedian will act out a comical story using only a fan and hand towel as props.
The comedy shows are performed in Japanese, so if you don’t speak the language you may not understand the jokes. However, many shows incorporate animated slapstick humour which can be great fun to watch. You’ll also get the chance to witness an interactive and fun-loving Japanese audience.
Outside the theatre’s entrance actors dressed as characters from Japanese popular culture frequently entertain the theatregoers and people passing by. Take a moment to admire the theatre’s colourful façade too, which is adorned with numerous wildlife carvings.
The Nanba Grand Kagetsu theatre is situated in Osaka’s Namba district, which is famous for its retail and entertainment centres. The Namba district is easily accessible via public trains and the metro. Combine a visit to the theatre with a look around the shops of the Shinsaibashi indoor shopping mall.
