One of the most visited piazzas in Italy offers more than just the amazing Leaning Tower of Pisa. Age-old walls, a massive cathedral and an extensive collection of medieval art all dot the well-tended lawns. Walk across the paths and tour some of the country’s most significant structures. Climb the Leaning Tower, a must-do on any Tuscan itinerary.
Some of the features of the piazza have been around for more than 1,000 years. Built between the 11th and 15th centuries, the square and its structures were named UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1987. Accordingly, the piazza is one of the most prized areas in Italy.
Spend some time circling the square to find the most beautiful views of the Leaning Tower, the Duomo and the Pisa Baptistry. Take some photos of the iconic Leaning Tower. Fortunately, the lawn in front of the tower is cordoned off, so you can snap some people-free photographs despite the fact that the piazza is always busy. If you’d like a rest from the crowds, step into the quiet Camposanto, a cemetery that borders the square to the north.
Consider buying a multi-attraction ticket, which will enable you explore the interior of each attraction at a discount. Take in a panorama of Pisa from the top of the Leaning Tower. Then, see a haunting mosaic of the Last Judgement inside the Duomo.
The amount of bright-white marble on the square is a beautiful sight. See the piazza by day to admire the Duomo, the Baptistery and the Leaning Tower shining under the Tuscan sun. Visit by night to photograph them gleaming in floodlights.
Reach the Piazza dei Miracoli on foot or by bus from many attractions in the city centre. The piazza is located on the northern edge of the historic district. If you are driving into town, park for a fee on Via Pietrasantina, located only a short walk away.
The piazza is open daily. Admission is free, but you will need tickets to enter the museums and historic buildings.
