This huge green space in the centre of Atlanta is much-loved by locals.
A popular destination since 1904, Piedmont Park is still expanding, despite being in the heart of Atlanta, northeast of downtown and next to midtown. Now the park covers more than 81 hectares: 14 hectares complete with a fountain and new sports facilities were added in 2011, and a further 6 hectares were added on in 2012. About half the park is given over to green open space, while in the centre of the park Lake Clara Meer, which affords walkers with lovely city views, is another major draw.
If you enjoy fishing, it's possible to camp out at one of the picturesque fishing piers and catch some local bream, bass or catfish, but you will need to arrange a State of Georgia fishing licence. Rods and tackle are available from shops in town. If you're more of a walker than fisher, the path that goes round the lake in a 1.6 kilometre loop is a popular place for both locals and visitors to congregate. If you want a longer walk, a loop of the whole park is 2.7 kilometres.
Active visitors have plenty of choices here to work up a sweat: there are tennis courts, soccer fields, volleyball courts, a large swimming and splash pool, which is Atlanta’s only lake front pool venue, and a popular park just for dogs.
The park also holds a wide variety of events throughout the year. On Saturday mornings from March to December, there's a food market where you can pick up fresh local produce. In April, the annual Dogwood Festival of Art takes place over three days, and includes art fairs and live entertainment. The Atlanta Jazz Festival is also held here each year over Memorial Day weekend in May.
The park is open from 6 am to 11 pm, however some facilities close earlier. Street parking in the area is limited, so it's best to get here by public transport: the closest MARTA station is Midtown.
