Make the daytrip from Hyderabad to visit the grandiose tombs of the seven Qutub Shah sultans that once ruled the area known as Golconda. Over a period of nearly 170 years, each of the sultans was buried in the same site, making it the only known site in the world of its kind. Today the tombs present a visually striking blend of architectural styles and a great chance to learn about the history of the ancient civilisation. The tombs also offer a much quieter experience than the nearby Golconda Fort.
Sign up for a guided tour at the main entrance to the tombs and an experienced historian will walk you through centuries of history. Snap a photograph of the unusual buildings as you note the fascinating architecture, a blend of Hindu, Persian and Pathan styles. Appreciate the bold arches and the giant dome that sits atop the main building.
Enter the tombs to see the magnificent sarcophagi, the symbolic coffins that sit atop each tomb. Each of the seven tombs is unique in design with some being far larger than others. Stand in awe as you look at the incredible mausoleum of Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah, the man that founded the city of Hyderabad. The 43-metre (140-foot) high structure is topped with a huge dome.
Explore the compact museum located on site to see relics that date back many centuries. Here you can admire ornate vases and valuable jewels. Afterwards stop by the mosque to see its towers and arches. A picnic in the grounds outside the tombs is a great way to finish the morning, leaving you plenty of time to explore the Golconda Fort nearby.
The Qutub Shahi Tombs are open daily and an admission fee applies. Located in the Ibrahim Bagh region, west of Hyderabad, the best way to reach the tombs is by bus or rental car.
