Discover the rich historical and cultural heritage of Salzburg at this award-winning museum, located in a palace complete with a chiming bell tower.

Since its humble beginnings in 1834, Salzburg Museum has archived and presented the artistic and cultural heritage of the city. Find out about Salzburg’s rich history and why this museum was awarded European Museum of the Year in 2009. See fascinating exhibits highlighting archeology and medieval history, architecture through the ages and notable achievements in the arts, science and politics by local residents.

The original museum was badly damaged in World War II. After a few decades of temporary lodging, it finally found a home in the Neue Residenz on Mozartplatz in the heart of Salzburg. This magnificent palace was once the residence of the archbishops of Salzburg. It also houses the city’s famous Glockenspiel, a 35-bell carillon from the 17th century.

Enter the museum to find three levels of fascinating Salzburg heritage. Wander through the first floor where exhibitions and multimedia presentations highlight significant people in Salzburg’s history.

On the second floor, learn about Salzburg’s modern history in the arts. See artworks from the Romantic period and stunning landscape paintings by local artists. Continue on this floor to see the museum’s collection of medieval and archaeological artifacts, including a Celtic jug and a Gothic winged altar.

Delve into the Panorama Passage, an underground passage that connects the museum with the Panorama Museum, an immersive 85.3-foot (26-meter) installation showing a 19th-century painting of the city by J. M. Sattler.

In the basement of the inner courtyard, find the Kunsthalle (Art Hall), a multipurpose temporary exhibition space that features three exhibitions a year.

Salzburg Museum is located on Mozartplatz near the Salzach River, the Cathedral Museum and Mozart’s Birthplace. The admission fee includes an audio guide. Discounts are available for seniors and children. Purchase a combined ticket to see the Panorama Museum. Free guided tours are available on Thursday evenings. The museum is closed on Mondays, November 1 and Christmas Day. Enjoy listening to the Glockenspiel in Mozartplatz for free at 7am, 11am and 6pm daily.
