Legends say that the chapel, which is dedicated to Maria zum Schnee (Our Lady of the Snows), was built after two walkers found their way after getting lost in the fog.
Ascend the trail leading above the lake to the 19th-century Hörnli Hut on the northeastern ridge of the Matterhorn mountain. Even higher is the Solvay Hut, which is perched perilously on a cliff edge and can be used in case of emergencies.
