African American Museum in Philadelphia

Learn all about African-American heritage from centuries past, right up to modern times.

The African American Museum Philadelphia (AAMP) gives visitors an eye-opening history of black culture, from an inauspicious past to a flourishing future. Exhibits begin sombrely, with detailed accounts of slavery during the 16th century, but the museum is also a celebration of what has been achieved in the fields of art, politics, sport and more. The collection of artifacts here is extensive. There is also a comprehensive range of interactive exhibits, making AAMP an extremely well-rounded attraction, suitable for all the family.

AAMP opened its doors to the public exactly 200 years after America's independence. As the centre of the abolitionist movement, Philadelphia itself has long been a vital cog in African-American history. In the 18th century, the city had the biggest free black population in the country. Today, the museum has over 750,000 objects and documents made available to the public, many from Philadelphia itself.

The museum is divided into three main sections: the African Diaspora, the Philadelphia Story and the Contemporary Narrative. A narrated light-up display documenting key events in the city's black community sets the scene perfectly. Next, marvel at ceremonial tools, musical instruments and weapons used by the early African-Americans. Photos, videos and artwork tell stories, both harrowing and uplifting, about a people who have experienced much pain and change. The museum's audiovisual projections cover the fight to abolish slavery as well as the fight for equal Civil Rights. Later exhibits focus on the achievements of the African-American community. If you're taking children, make sure they see the theatrical items that once belonged to Pearl Bailey (star of vaudeville, and later, Broadway).

A gift shop at the end of the experience sells original and thought-provoking presents, including textiles and jewellery, plus an inspiring range of literature.

AAMP is in the centre of Philadelphia's Historic District and is easily reachable on public transport. The museum is open every day. Special events and exhibitions are held regularly. Check ahead to see what's on during your visit.
