Learn the long history of art in this extensive museum which features spectacular works from the medieval age along with paintings of contemporary masters.

Browse one of the Netherland’s most prominent collections of modern art in the Bonnefanten Museum. This expansive gallery space features works from the School of Paris and minimalism alongside a number of spectacular historic works. Among the paintings, browse sculptures collected from all over Europe. Even the building is a work of art, with its ornate housing considered one of the finest buildings in Maastricht.

Though originally built in 1884, the Bonnefanten Museum was moved to its modern location in 1995. To locals, it is known as the “Ceramique.” Its dome, designed by architect Aldo Rossi, is easily recognized from around the city. This modern masterpiece is historically known for its combined in-house collections of modern and historical art. Visitors today, however, will find the influences of contemporary dominating its exhibits.

Notable artists like Luciano Fabro, Iannis Kounnelis and Sol LeWitt, who specialise in conceptual, minimalist and neo-expressionist art, feature in the museum’s primary displays. Wander an exhibition space dedicated to Maastricht’s art scene and experience a conceptual movie adventure in its video room.

The museum’s ancient art is found on the first floor. Browse a collection of 14th and 15th-century Italian paintings. Also of note are Dutch and Flemish works from the 16th century. Nearby, a rare display of medieval sculpture is well worth some time. See altarpieces from across Western Europe and peruse collections of trinkets carved from ivory, alabaster and wood.

Before exiting, try some local Dutch treats in the modern Café Ipanema, the in-house snack vendor. Afterwards, browse the shop for an art-related souvenir.

Find the Bonnefanten Museum on Avenue Ceramique along the River Maas. Walk there from the city centre or catch the bus down the road. Drivers can also find paid parking. The museum is open daily except Mondays and there is an admission fee.
