If you only have time to visit one place in Mexico’s amazing Riviera Maya then Chankanaab National Park should be top of your list. It has a little of everything, making this stretch of Caribbean coastline one of the country’s favourite destinations.
Pristine beaches, Mayan ruins, top-class diving and ancient health therapies are all on offer at this stunning national park on the tropical island of Cozumel, just a short ferry trip from Playa del Carmen. It’s also an ideal spot for young families as there are an abundance of activities popular with the kids, from dolphin shows to swimming and snorkelling in the calm, sheltered waters.
Chankanaab National Park is a special area, full of rare, native flora, fauna and beautiful coral just offshore: all protected by law in this wonderful nature reserve. A good way to start your visit is with a walk through the lush jungle. There are a number of maintained trails to follow or alternatively you can take one of the regular free guided tours. The Dolphin Discovery centre in the park is always popular with younger visitors as you are given the opportunity to swim with trained, playful dolphins in special pools.
Scuba diving and snorkelling are the preferred activities in the Caribbean seas just off the coast, with visitors flocking to see the array of colourful tropical fish and amazing marine gardens. The limestone caves in the inland lagoon also make a great spot for some underwater exploration. For those that can’t dive then the Sea Trek Helmet Dive offers the best opportunity that you’ll ever get to experience the underwater world as you walk along the sea bed wearing a special helmet and breathing apparatus.
The botanical gardens are great for nature lovers and if history is your thing, then the numerous Mayan ruins in the park will keep you occupied for days. After a long day exploring everything this wonderful reserve has to offer, what better way to relax then by treating yourself to a traditional massage followed by a cocktail in a hammock as the sun goes down?
The park is open daily and there is an admission fee.
