The Corniche runs along some 8 kilometres (5 miles) of Abu Dhabi’s northwestern shore, making the most of its unique situation where the city meets the sea. You will find all manner of attractions along its well-maintained stretch, from plush hotels to lush gardens and even a top-class swimming beach. Whether you drive, cycle or walk along The Corniche, it makes for a picturesque experience.
Some of Abu Dhabi’s most magisterial skyscrapers overlook The Corniche. Look out for Nation Towers and the luxury hotel named Emirates Palace on the southwestern end. You can also catch a good sight of Lulu Island, a man-made island that can only be reached by private boat. On the northeastern side, admire The Landmark in all its postmodern glory.
The central stretch of The Corniche is dominated by the well-loved Corniche Beach, which is home to umbrella rentals as well as all of the usual beach amenities. Beach volleyball and a variety of watersports are also on offer. Corniche Beach proudly wears its Blue Flag status, an international standard acknowledging beaches with exceptional water quality. Enjoy the calm, clean water, supervised by lifeguards, then head back to shore for a cool drink and a snack or some shopping.
For busy locals, The Corniche is a much-needed source of respite from the hustle and bustle of Abu Dhabi’s commercial districts. Stroll through the impressive landscaped gardens that run alongside the main stretch, or join local families in one of the various playgrounds there. Separate pathways designed for joggers and cyclists are also extremely popular.
The Corniche can be driven from end to end, although traffic during peak hour can be somewhat hazardous. Free parking is available within a few minutes’ walk from the beach. Otherwise, rent a bicycle and explore The Corniche at your own pace.
