One of the finest spots in all of California, the hillside community around La Jolla Cove is home to beautiful houses, great shops, pristine beaches and some of the state’s most privileged and trendy people.
The cove itself is conveniently situated downtown, nestled between two sandstone cliffs. Popular with families, you can come here for a splash in the water at low tide, and even bring youngsters to the Children’s Pool Beach nearby. For great views along the bluffs above the ocean, check out Scripps Park—if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot the local sea lions playing.
Famed for its upmarket shops, the area’s finest retail outlets are located along Prospect Street, Girard Avenue and La Jolla Boulevard. Stroll around these streets and you’ll find charming galleries and cafés as well as many splendid boutiques with all kinds of wares on offer. If you’re looking for a spot to eat then you’re in luck too, with world-class restaurants all over the area, but be sure to reserve a table if you want to try one of the eateries overlooking the ocean.
For some adventure on your trip, you can try out scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking and fishing. Just 10 minutes from La Jolla by car you’ll also find Torrey Pines, a PGA golf course that has played host to many professional golfers. Or, for a more relaxing respite, visit Windansea Beach and admire the waves from afar.
Situated 24 kilometres to the north of downtown San Diego, you can rent a car to get you to La Jolla—but be sure to walk around and enjoy the sights on foot. You can also reach the area on the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) bus service: route 30 leaves from the heart of town and stops at La Jolla Village Square.
