The lakes and horticultural displays of this large green area offer a refreshing change of pace from the lights and action of Blackpool’s piers.

Inland from the entertainment district of Blackpool’s coast lie the refined and peaceful grounds of Stanley Park. Dense thickets of woodland stand beside elegant fountains, formal gardens and a vast and picturesque lake. Admire the selection of ornamental features, buildings and public works of art dotted throughout the 390-acre (158-hectare) park.

Photograph the colorful floral displays of the Italian Gardens and inspect the Medici lion statues next to the set of steps. Sit on one of the concrete benches of the outdoor amphitheater that encircles a white-and-gray domed bandstand. Framed by an orderly hedge, the arena backs onto the boating lake.

Climb across the stone bridges to reach the island at the lake’s core. Rent a motor boat or paddleboat to take out on the water. Surrounding the lake are Cocker Tower and several horticultural sections, such as the rose garden and the Remembrance Garden.

Enter the park’s visitor center and read the displays and brochures about the park. Talks and events often occur in this building, which can be rented for birthday parties. Enjoy snacks and drinks in the Art Deco Café.

Play on well-kept bowling greens and make use of other facilities. Locals often play rugby or soccer on the nearby playing fields. Rent a tennis court on a clear afternoon or play mini-golf with your kids.

The children’s play area will keep young ones entertained for hours, with its slides, swings and rocking horses. Watch them take on the interactive surfboard and the climbing web.

The park is free to enter and opens daily year-round from dawn until dusk. Listen for a horn that sounds 15 minutes before closing time.

Head inland from the city’s famed coastline to find Stanley Park, between Layton and Great Marton. Ride a bus to a stop along the park’s boundaries. If you drive, leave your car in the West Park Drive lot for free. While in this part of the city, play a few rounds at the Blackpool Park Golf Club or see the animals in the Blackpool Zoo.
