With over 100 years of maritime history including numerous wartime voyages, the US Sloop-of-War Constellation is a US Navy legend that has become a hugely popular attraction.
This timber, triple-masted vessel was launched in 1854 and took its name from an earlier, equally renowned frigate. The craft originally served as part of the Mediterranean Squadron which protected American interests in the region. Later, as flagship of the African squadron, it helped to hinder the slave trade.
It was retired in 1955 and was reconstructed to resemble the earlier frigate, which was built in Baltimore in 1797. In 1999, the ship was restored to the tune of 9 million dollars and was returned to the Inner Harbour where it now offers interactive tours to the public.
Visitors to the USS Constellation should start by popping into the Maritime Museum which contains relics from the ship and belongings of the original crew. When you get to the other side of the museum you’ll come to Pier 1 where you’ll find the impressive vessel. Check the schedule for the Parrott-rifle firing before you climb the stairs and come aboard.
The crew will be more than happy to show you around or alternatively you can try one of the audio tours – there are separate ones for adults and children. Wander through the four decks of this antique ship and see how life was for sailors during wartime. Visit the captain’s plush quarters before heading below decks to see how the majority of the 325-strong crew lived.
Participate in a gun drill, wrestle with sail lines and try your hand at turning the capstan, a rotating lifting machine – only attempt this if your feeling energetic! The Powder Monkey tours at weekends are aimed at kids to teach them about the lives of the boys as young as six who carried gunpowder for the ship’s cannons.
The USS Constellation is open every day and children’s tickets are discounted. There is pay parking available and the Charm City Circulator shuttle bus will take you there from the city centre for free.
