Imagine yourself as an ancient traveller, looking upon the striking, fortified entrance to Maastricht, the Helpoort (Hell’s Gate). This medieval construct has a long history of different uses, but remains an iconic image. Enjoy views from its top or walk along the gate walls to a nearby park.
Helpoort stands as the oldest town gate in the Netherlands, and Maastricht’s only remaining portal. It was built in 1229, when Maastricht was awarded town status. The gate formed part of the town’s fortifications for two centuries and then served as an armoury, gunpowder storeroom and artist’s studio. Visit it today and enjoy its authentic look, which can be attributed to extensive restorations through the 20th century.
From around the area, the high gate’s flanking towers mark its location. Between them, an orange wooden watch house above the gate is a distinctly Dutch piece of architecture. Ask locals about the legend of its name, which was supposedly born from the heat given out from the blacksmith’s studios within. Explore these rooms today and find a museum dedicated to Maastricht’s history. Be sure to chat to the knowledgeable docents around the exhibit space. This exhibition charges no admission, but is only open during the summer months.
From the top of Helpoort’s tower, marvel at the expansive Maastricht cityscape. Take a walk around the old town walls, which end with an entrance to a manicured city park. Bring a picnic and enjoy the shaded lawns with a view of the ancient defences.
Find Helpoort on the west side of Maastricht. It is open for walks year-round. The gate is a perfect start of a city tour, with possible next destinations being St. Pietersberg or bustling Vrijthof Square nearby.
