Jordan Park is a great place to enjoy Krakow’s outdoors, with its network of paths, gardens and open fields. Pass flower beds that are in full bloom, locals playing games of football, people exercising in the public gym and families enjoying the day. See skateboarders execute daredevil jumps at the skate ramp or relax by the lake and watch the paddleboats make their way across the water.
A philanthropist, doctor and social reformer named Henryk Jordan established the park in 1889. He designed the grounds to test his philosophy that physical exercise was just as important as education for children. It was the first public park in Poland and the first park in Europe to promote exercise. While World War II saw the destruction of the park, it has since been restored to its former state. Over 21 hectares (52 acres) are lined with trails, sports fields and green spaces to encourage visitors to have an active lifestyle.
If you’re feeling energetic, reserve a nearby tennis court or join in with a game of football. Local teams and groups of friends come here to play touch football, soccer or Frisbee.
You can also test how fit you are on one of the exercise trails. Go for a morning jog, ride on a rented bicycle or try some of the exercise equipment, which have instructions to give you a full-body workout. For something a little more relaxing, hire a paddleboat or kayak and enjoy gliding across the water.
Meander along the blooming flowerbeds and clipped lawns and see 100-year-old elm and lime trees. On the sides of the paths are the busts of some of Poland’s most important historical figures. See if you can find all 36 statues.
Jordan Park is open every day of the year and admission is free. It is situated just a few blocks west of the Old Town within easy walking distance of many hotels and attractions. Buses and trams will also get you to the entrance of the park.
