Take a break from the urban rush within the peaceful grounds of the People’s Garden (Volksgarten). Wander through to get between the Theseus Temple and the Elizabeth Memorial or enjoy a scenic picnic on its lawns. The park’s Rose Garden features lovely blooms in the summer months. Evenings in the park are characterised by music and lively dancing at the onsite disco, held in a glass pavilion.
Built between 1820 and 1823, the Volksgarten is one of Vienna’s oldest public recreational areas. The parkland is part of the neighbouring Hofburg Palace, which is also worth a visit. The park’s design reflects formal French garden styles, with manicured garden displays and wide paths. Though no ruins remain, the gardens where built atop the former site of the city’s fortifications.
Stroll to the Volksgarten’s central monument, the Theseus Temple. This impressive construct features high, white marble columns and a low portico. Enthusiasts of Greek Revival architecture might recognise this monument as an exact reproduction of the Temple of Hephaestus in Greece.
From the centre, each direction has its own sights to enjoy. Visit the Rose Garden and take a relaxing stroll through the colourful and sweet-scented atmosphere. A number of varieties bring different hues to the displays. To the north, the Elizabeth Memorial pays tribute to the former empress. Look for its central sculpture of Empress Elizabeth, and then walk around its small pond.
Enjoy lunch at the Volksgarten with a picnic on the lawns or a meal at the Pavilion café. At night, this attractive glass building hosts Vienna’s oldest disco. Local party-goers have been coming here for over 180 years to dance. Join the crowds for a lively night beneath the Pavilion’s palms and chandeliers.
Find the Volksgarten next to the Hofburg Palace in Vienna’s Inner Stadt. The park is open daily between April to September and charges no admission. The park is well served by tram, bus and metro routes that stop nearby.
