Vienna's historic State Opera is known the world over as one of the most important opera houses in existence. Over 50 of the finest productions on the planet are staged every year within the walls of this impressive building.
Come to catch some operatic perfection in the evening or visit during the day to take a tour of this grand old edifice, whose Renaissance-style exterior houses a mesmerising collection of symbolic statues, amazing tapestries and gilded decor. The central boulevard of Ringstraße is where you'll find the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) which was the first of the prominent buildings built here in 1869.
Extensive damage during World War II was lovingly repaired during the 1950s to restore the structure to its former glory and it has gone from strength to strength since, becoming home to one of the world's largest opera repertoires.
The building's ornate façade will demand your attention ever before you step inside, with the Habsburg coat of arms and muses on horseback above the two-storied loggias. Once inside, take the main staircase, admiring the beautiful marble statues of the seven free arts on either side as you pass. Look to the ceiling where you'll find a truly magnificent fresco known as Praise and Recognition. The luxuriant gold tea room where Emperor Franz Joseph once sipped tea is surely the most lavish in the whole building.
You can take one of the frequent guided tours or visit the nearby State Opera Museum if you want to learn more about the fascinating history of this famous old building, and there are combination tickets for sale that cover entry to both institutions. The opera house has a capacity of 2,200 on performance nights so if you're interested in seeing an opera production you should buy tickets in advance as they sell out fast.
Located off Karlsplatz in the city centre, the Vienna State Opera is easily accessible on foot and via public transport. The Kärntner Ring Garage offers discounted parking for up to eight hours if you come by car.
English guided tours are available from late morning to late afternoon every day except Sundays and public holidays.
