Browse more than 21,000 paintings, sculptures, photos and other modern artistic works in this innovative complex that celebrates living artists.

The renowned Whitney Museum of American Art has a sleek modern design and overlooks the Hudson River. Founded by a socialite and art patron in 1931, the museum has developed a focus on American art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Stroll past the various displays across many floors to grapple with contemporary U.S. art.

Admire the innovative appearance of the large building, which has a jumbled design. Its floors are like glass puzzle pieces stacked together. See the structure at night, when it seems to come alive, with its well-lit glass outline reflected in the Hudson River.

Embark on a free guided tour of the museum for a comprehensive understanding of its exhibits. The institution also has multimedia guides with opinions and statements on the works from the artists and curators. Browse the various temporary exhibitions which change throughout the year. Themes range from human interest portraits and modern works to cinematic experiments and societal issues.

Admire the artistic treasures in the permanent exhibits, consisting of films, videos, prints and additional traditional media. The gallery displays the works of more than 3,000 artists. See pieces by such masters as Edward Hopper and Maurice Prendergast.

Take a break from the artworks with a meal at Untitled restaurant on the ground floor. Relax with snacks and refreshments on the eighth-floor Studio Café.

Save money by booking tickets in advance and get discounts for seniors and students. Members and those under 18 can visit for free. The museum is open Wednesday through Monday from morning until early evening. Note that it stays open until late on Fridays and Saturdays and is closed on Tuesdays.

The Whitney Museum of American Art is between the areas of Greenwich and Chelsea in Lower Manhattan, several miles south of Central Park, on the eastern flank of the Hudson River.
