Appreciate the stunning architectural design and spot the intriguing gargoyles of the world’s tallest steel-supported brick building as it gleams in the skyline.

The Chrysler Building is an iconic skyscraper of art deco design that initially served as the headquarters of the Chrysler Corporation car manufacturer. At a height of 319 metres (1,046 feet), it is one of the tallest structures in New York. Stand back and try to capture a photo of this enormous building topped by a unique spire of arches. Just below the arches are eagle gargoyles resembling auto hood ornaments.

See the structure at night, when warm light penetrates the triangular windows of its peak. Note the 56-metre (185-foot) spire at the summit of the building. Among the few ways to see it from above is to ascend to the top of the nearby Empire State Building. From here, appreciate the concentric arches gleaming in the sunlight or lit with its distinctive pattern at night.

The Chrysler Building lobby is the only part of the building that is open to visitors. Gaze up at the art deco light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. Admire the red Moroccan marble walls and the yellow-and-blue floor. Inspect the intricate mosaic surrounding the elevator doors. Notice the impressive wooden reception desk beneath the glowing clock.

Among the highlights is the ceiling mural, Transport and Human Endeavour, by Michigan-born artist Edward Trumbull. Notice how the work of art portrays the Chrysler Building itself alongside other structures and an airplane.

The building dates back to 1931, when it was the tallest in the world for almost 1 year. It was the headquarters of the Chrysler Corporation from its inception until the 1950s. Today, it contains the offices of several large companies.

Visit the lobby area Monday through Friday from morning until early evening. It is free to enter and look around.

The Chrysler Building is in New York City’s Turtle Bay neighbourhood. Find it in the East Side of Midtown Manhattan, just one block southeast from Grand Central Terminal. Arrive here easily from most parts of the city via subway or bus. Make sure to see nearby landmarks, including the Morgan Library and Museum, Bryant Park and the United Nations Headquarters.

Different from any other building we went to. Only saw the foyer but that was enough.
