Take a break from the commotion of Hong Kong’s streets in this serene and picturesque park in the city centre. Old structures are hidden amongst the greenery, while the huge towers of the Hong Kong skyline encircle the park’s borders. Relax in traditional Chinese style in a tai chi group or on a bench alongside the park’s central koi pond.
Built on the former site of Victoria Barracks, Hong Kong Park shows the considerable impact the British had on the city during their more than two-century-long occupation. The Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, for instance, is situated in Cassels Block, which formerly housed British military officers. Browse the modern artwork spread throughout the centre. Tour the Flagstaff House to find the Museum of Tea Ware, featuring many vessels for one of the hottest commodities of Sino-British commerce. Other British period structures that still grace the park include the Wavell House and the Rawlinson House.
Over 800 birds flit about the Edward Youde Aviary, which lies on Hong Kong Park’s southwest side. Follow the elevated paths and strain your neck to see vibrant feathered friends soaring through the cavernous space. Fig, candlenut and kapok trees make up the aviary’s dense canopy. Once you’ve explored the large enclosure, tour the smaller cage exhibits to get a close-up of select Asian species, many of which are rare and brightly coloured.
Join peace-seeking locals at the Tai Chi Garden next door. Bend, breathe and stretch while learning an ancient Chinese practice. More inner peace can be found alongside Hong Kong Park’s large koi pond, which lies in its centre. Stroll along its banks, and make a stop at Fountain Plaza to take in the mushroom-like fountain that runs there. The nearby park restaurant accommodates hungry visitors.
Glimpse exotic plants and butterflies at the Forsgate Conservatory. Three densely packed buildings house regional plant and animal species.
Take a bus or ride the metro to the park, which is centrally located. Conservatory tours can be booked online. Hong Kong Park is open daily.
