Visit the Peace Tower to learn about Ottawa’s Gothic Revival architecture and take in unparalleled views of the city. The tower is a distinctive landmark in Ottawa and stands in the Centre Block, or main building, of Parliament Hill.
Begin your visit to the Peace Tower on Wellington Street for the best photo opportunities of the tower itself. From here, you can see the Centre Block and the impressive 92.2-metre (302-foot) Peace Tower. After Parliament’s main building was destroyed by fire in 1916, it was rebuilt with the addition of the tower. Both structures are built in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. The tower features classic detailing of this period, including etched and stained-glass windows and iron crests.
Go to the tower’s second floor to visit the Memorial Chamber, which honours Canadians killed in conflict since the Confederation. Take the elevator to the top of the tower to take in 360-degree views from the observation area.
The tower has a collection of 53 bells, one of which weighs 10,000 kilograms (23,000 pounds) and another bell that weighs just 4.5 kilograms (9.9 pounds). Hear the bells rung on weekdays between September and June. In August, hour-long bell recitals can be heard ringing through the gardens.
Wander around the rest of Parliament Hill. Visit the public gallery to listen to a live debate in the House of Commons or Senate. Note the symbolic imagery in the chambers’ decorations and artworks, including the ceilings covered in gold leaf. These symbols are intended to remind parliamentarians of their country’s history and values.
