The Library of Birmingham moved into its fantastic, newly built 10-floor home at Centenary Square on 3rd September 2013. It thereby became the largest public library in the United Kingdom, and indeed the largest public cultural space in all of Europe. It is a flagship in the redevelopment of the city.
The collection of relics related to the life and works of the incomparable William Shakespeare is undoubtedly a highlight of the library. It contains over 40,000 pieces, including some 10,000 programmes and roughly 6,000 photographs. Pride of place is given to an extremely rare copy of the First Folio from 1623 this was the first volume to contain all of Shakespeare’s works. Another beautiful antiquity to be examined is the Parker Collection, which consists of charming children’s books and games, the oldest of which dates from 1538.
Browse through the fascinating collection of European and American portrait photographs from the middle part of the 19th century for an insight into the different lives lead by people in those times. The photographs of Benjamin Stone, a British politician, are another treat.
The golden age of the movies (before they became “talkies”!) is evoked in the huge collection of silent movie music held here, including a rare piece by the master, Charlie Chaplin. You can also enjoy the fantastic range of greetings cards on display, dating from the start of the 1800s until the early 1900s.
The Glad Ur Not… section of the library gives an incredible insight into the huge hardships in the lives of children during the Industrial Revolution, and is guaranteed to captivate young visitors.
Birmingham Literature Festival takes place annually, with talks and poetry readings held here, as well as other events in the outdoor amphitheatre. Check the library website for details.
The Library of Birmingham is in the city centre, and is easily accessible by foot, bus, or train. It is open every day of the year, except on public holidays. There is late opening from Monday to Friday, and you can check the website for specific hours.
