Go on coastal walks and enjoy great ocean vistas from a rocky viewpoint at a beach on Cozumel’s wild side.

Head to Cozumel's rugged eastern coast for the El Mirador lookout, a sea-carved rock arch that forms a bridge over the water. Climb on top of the natural structure to enjoy commanding views across the Caribbean toward Cuba and watch the ocean splashing giant waves against the rocks.

Relax on the adjacent beach, a small white sandy strip punctuated by rock formations. Lie back and feel the heat of the sun’s rays. Try snorkeling when the sea is calm. If you decide to go for a swim, don't venture too far from shore. This side of the island has strong currents and undertows and the beach does not have lifeguard supervision.

Set out on a coastal hike from El Mirador, which will take you to other beaches and some deserted stretches. Bring sturdy shoes with you because the shoreline is rocky. Examine the shells that collect in large numbers as the tide washes them up on the shore. Pause to enjoy the glorious views of the wild scenery. Break up your hike by looking for rock pools where you can soak in water warmed by the sun.

After your exertions, enjoy a picnic back at El Mirador. Don't worry if you haven't brought any food or refreshments with you. Purchase refreshingly cold drinks, snacks and souvenirs from vendors on the beach.

While you are on this part of the island, visit some of the other nearby attractions. These include the Mayan ruins, Celarain lighthouse, beaches and wildlife of Punta Sur Eco Beach Park. This exciting family-friendly attraction is also known as Faro Celarain Eco Park.

El Mirador and its beach are located on the eastern side of Cozumel, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) southeast of San Miguel, the island’s main city. Arrive by taxi or moped. You can also drive here if you prefer. Parking at the beach is free.
